Rating: B+

Ken Kesey wrote two great, highly-acclaimed novels: One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest and Sometimes a Great Notion. He wrote other books, but no one really cares about them it seems. The Electric Kool-Aid Acid Test is the last document of Kesey as cultural powerhouse during his lifetime. It’s also the elevation of beat generation counter culture into the psychedelic era. It’s experimental “new” journalism featuring a lot of nonsense.

I would have loved this book back in high school, the peak of my beat phase. Today it’s too hard not to associate the last remnants of hippie culture with people from high school who stopped bathing, take too many drugs, listen to horrible jam rock bands like Phish and Umphrey’s McGee, and get together to pollute national parks to ride the wave or something. Still, this “non-fiction novel” is enthralling because it’s kind of the perfect summation of a generation.

To promote his second novel Sometimes a Great Notion, which is a very difficult beast I barely got through several years ago, Ken Kesey and a bunch of crazies calling themselves the Merry Pranksters got into a brightly colored school bus called Further and drove from coast to coast. Behind the wheel is Neal Cassady of On the Road fame, now pushing middle age and close to his death. He doesn’t stop talking, can’t stop moving, and likes to spend time flipping a sledgehammer in the air.

It almost seems too tidy, but it all happened. Kesey and the Pranksters travel around and seemingly encounter every facet of the psychedelic/summer of love era. They have a huge party with the Hell’s Angels, get freaked out by Beatlemania at a Beatles concert full of screaming, maniacal teenage girls, go visit Tim Leary (who is too busying doing an “experiment” to see them), hang out with Jack Kerouac and Allen Ginsberg, and Kesey even talks at a Vietnam protest rally where he tells everyone they’re just playing into what the establishment wants.

In between adventures, they host a series of “acid tests” where the Grateful Dead play and there are all sorts of trippy visuals and everyone’s on acid. Eventually Kesey flees to Mexico after getting charged with marijuana possession. The Pranksters eventually follow and more zaniness ensues. It’s all quite entertaining.

Tom Wolfe gets in all the details, but tries to duplicate the psychedelic in his writing. It makes sense what he was trying to do, but it mostly seems silly and overly reverential. Wolfe treats Kesey as if he were a prophet founding some new religion, though they really come off as a cult. A few people who get too fucked up on drugs the Pranksters treat rather horribly and are far too fixated on enforcing a group identity of nonconformity. It’s like when punk kids buy all their clothing at Hot Topic, a publicly traded company.

This book makes me feel old and lame.

Skinny Puppy’s upcoming album, Weapon, is now available for preorder on CD and limited edition 180g vinyl from Metropolis records for release on May 28th. See the tracklisting and press info below, including a familiar song title:::

This stunning new album stands as a commentary on that which it is named after, the Weapon, or more specifically, to the concurrent glorification of the gun culture and simultaneous horror at the devastation the gun can cause. Given this view, the pop undertones of the albums opening wornin’ and the compelling counterpoint of the vocals and lyrics seem to reflect our mass media homogenization of an instrument of death into an entertainment centerpiece. illisiT could then be focusing on the authoritarian control applied to us under the guise of protecting us from the criminal element. Though possibly it is from the view of the average citizen, arming themselves against the threat of each other. The more it is analyzed, the more it could be pondered on varying levels. Perhaps the classic Skinny Puppy sounds evident in the song solvent are a nod to not only the past, but to a bleak Orwellian future, cycle of the weapon leads only to power in the hands of those who have no fear of using it. Are we facing a 1984 dystopia filtered through a Kafkaesque lens? A world where the illusion of power given to the private citizen afforded ownership of a weapon distracts them from the Big Brother drones that watch overhead? Parallels could certainly be drawn from our own society to a track like tsudanama, where the ever building menace of the mechanized rhythms crashes over the listener in waves as the vocals at times seem to take the tone of the voice of protest, standing against the inevitable tide of the dystopian path of progress. Then does plasiCage implore the listener to take up the fight against a gun worship culture and the spiraling towards oligarchy? Or are the mournful tones terminal a funeral dirge for our society? Could the weapon be the gun, or the one who wields it? Is it in creating an arms race among the populace, or does it lie in the resulting authoritarian control given to those who are charged with protecting us from ourselves? Is it the power to profit from the cycle? Is it the singular act of speaking against the conditioning of our thoughts and actions? 01. wornin’ 02. illisiT 03. saLvo 04. gLowbeL 05. solvent 06. paragUn 07. survivalisto 08. tsudanama 09. plastiCage 10. terminal

Label: None

The Murder City Devils can really do no wrong in my eyes. They are one of my Top 10 all time favorite bands. There will be more MCD recs in the future.

This 45 is the newest recording by this 6 piece (7 if you count roadie Gabe. :) ). It is a large departure from their earlier records, but an expected sound follow-up to their EP “Thelema” where they took a bit of a turn originally.

I had to order this record direct from their website. I’m not sure if there are any more available. I got this the first week it came out, and I already missed out on the colored vinyl editions of them. Also, this is the first thing the band has released that has not been on the Sub Pop label.

This band is just perfect sonically. Self-described by guitarist Nate as “loud, drunk rock n roll” on the documentary “Rock & Roll Won’t Wait”, this band lives up to it and more. Just grab anything and everything you can by these guys. There is a reason they haven’t gotten stale to me after 10+ years of listening to them. And they only made 3 studio albums and an EP!

Murder City Devils - I Drink The Wine

Wine. Nectar of the gods. Go to alcoholic drink for many a woman or anyone trying to slim down their figure. My mom prefers hers from a box. I could go for a glass or two right now actually.

This song has been bouncing around my head for a couple of days now, for no particular reason. Spencer Moody expels the lyrics raucously. The rest of Devils tear it up with their respective instruments. I just really like the lyrics of this song. So simple, but everyone’s been in the situation before. Everyone’s been heartbroken or dumped.

“We made a deal in the car. You’re still angry. I feel nothing at all.” What was the deal? That they’d put on happy faces at a gathering , not letting on the tumultuousness that’s really occurring between these two people? I like that I can come up with my own backstory to this song. I also like that “a kiss goodbye” sounds like “I kissed a guy.” Maybe that’s the reason things didn’t work out between these two.

I love this song. I love this album (this is just one of a few songs that reference booze, another great one is Rum to Whiskey). It’s definitely one of my favorite albums of my early 20s. It’s so loud and aggressive and dark. The album artwork is amazing, the booklet contains crime scene photos of each of the band members all dead in different ways. One of the best live bands I have ever seen live. If you’d like some evidence click the live version of this song below during their 2006 reunion show in Seattle.

Side note: I happened to look up the pitchfork review of this album from 2001. It got a 3.1. The reviewer said they couldn’t remember what the album sounded like. What the hell was the guy listening to then? Cos there’s no way to forget In Name in Blood. Pitchfork, forever a shit. -a

Photo
